Class Summary

This course serves as an introduction to Character Design. With your instructor Phillip Stewart you will bring an initial concept of a character from the brainstorming stages all the way to a final illustration depicting your character interacting in their world. The concepts behind stories, world building, character archetypes and other tools for visualizing your character will be taught in order to help you have a deeper understanding of how to design a character.

Syllabus

Week 1 A technical breakdown of characters, stories, and a discussion on how to research and study iconic characters from different forms of media. Will start initial process of designing characters.

Week 2 A deep dive into character archetypes and interpreting their meaning from their design. Will take initial designs from characters and refine them with the class collectively.

Week 3 An initial warm up of brainstorming quick character designs. Will take the refined characters and begin the process of making a final character sheet.

Week 4 Class review of the finalized character sheets. Further discussion of the character’s story as well as world building. Begin final project that involves making an illustration of the character in context of their story.

Week 5 Class review of the character illustrations.
