Artist BIO
Based in East Denver, Conner Jhoon Choi is a landscape painter, muralist and arts educator.
Painting primarily en plein air, his masterful handling of gouache and oil paint brings remote places and fleeting moments to rest on paper and canvas. Focusing primarily on the alpine, desert, and coastal environments of the Western US, his work reflects on a personal relationship with place and time. Through a contemporary sense of composition and color, his landscapes inspire close, intentional observation and the calming presence of still moments.
Motivated by a passion for culture, identity, and representation, his mural work fuses Korean motifs with his traditional Western painting education. Often featuring local mountains painted in a traditional Korean style, Choi’s murals generate a sense of local pride paired with a distinctly Asian-American aesthetic.
A regular presence at First Fridays on Santa Fe Dr. as well as CRAFt, an annual exhibition featuring underrepresented creatives, Choi strives for community connection and promotion of social justice through his work. Through community based mural projects, he practices a belief that art offers unique opportunities for social commentary, visual impact, and community placemaking that can connect and uplift all of us.
Managing his own art school as well as volunteering with Cruxing in Color, a non profit org that connects, supports and uplifts climbers of color in the Front Range, Conner shares his knowledge and love of art and outdoor skills with the greater community. When he is not painting you can can find him hiking, gardening, or rock climbing with friends.
